 Abstract:Indiasrise as an economic and political superpower occurs against  significant changesin the global scene: transformations within  the West on the one hand andrevolutions in the Arab world on the  other. Member of Indian Parliament Dr. Shashi Tharoor addresses the  issues relating to the new status ofIndiain the international  arena, both economically and politically. He alsochallenges the facile notion according to whichIndiasinfluence and role derive solely  from its economic growth or militarystrength.

About Dr. Shashi TharoorDr Tharoor is an author, United Nation’s Peace Keeper, a formerMinister of State for External Affairs and now an elected member of IndianParliament.  He had a long career in the United Nations from 1978 to 2007including as Under Secretary General  for Communications and PublicInformation.  Dr. Tharoor is an award winning author of 12 books and severalarticles, op-eds and columns.  He is an internationally known Speaker onIndias recent Transformationand future prospects, globalization, freedom of press, Indias culture andIndiaspresent and potential influence in world politics.For more information about Dr Tharoorplease see http://tharoor.in/

  • Born in London in 1956.
  • Educated in Bombay, Calcutta, Delhi (BA in History, St. Stephen’s College)
  • PhD from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at Tufts University
  • Since 1978, he has worked for United Nations, serving with UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
  • Since October 1989, he has been a senior official at UN HQ in New York, where, until late 1996, he was responsible for peacekeeping operations in the former Yugoslavia.
  • January 1997 to July 1998 – Executive Assistant to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
  • July 1998 – appointed Director of Communications and Special Projects in the office of the Secretary-General.
  • January 2001 –  appointed by the Secretary-General as interim head of the Dept. of Public Information.
  • June 2002 – confirmed as Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information of the United Nations.
  • Joined Indian National Congress Party. He was elected to the Parliament (lower house) in India in 2009.
  • 28 May 2009 – appointed Minister of State for External Affairs.
  • April 2010 –  Resigned from his post as Minister of State for External Affairs.
 
 Shashi Tharoor is the winner of numerous journalism and literary awards.
